Bolt patterns on almost everything matches up, with some minor changes when they went to a cross-bolted crank. They just tapped holes metric instead of SAE. As a note of some amusement, the bellhousing bolts were SAE up until the very end - my 4.2 project engine (262 ci) from '94 is that way.

Knew about the SAE bolts on the bellhousing. Found out about it by chance when I was looking at getting a 5 speed for my Disco. Still find it amusing that my Disco shares an engine with the TVR Chimera.

With the bellhousing pattern unchanged, one can get and use an adapter plate BOP to SBC to fit it to standard trans setups - in my case it'll probably be a BW T-10.

I was looking at R380's but they're effing expensive shipping from England so my plan is just to find a rusted out D1 with a 5 speed this side of the pond and buy it for dirt cheap. Actually you could probably look into doing the same because one of my buddies picked up a clean M/T D1 for around $600. Crazy fucker drove all the way up to Maine on balding street tires with the rest of us in our modded rigs and wheeled with us.

The trick is, I want a compact trans (low) with left side discrete selector levers that I can get in 3-speed or 4-speed and adapt to an existing three-on-the-tree shifter rather than bringing through the floor. In fact, I'd be using a Ford toploader if it offered all the options a T-10 does. 3 or 4-speed depends on how easy it will be to add an extra gate to the column shift.
Hence: BW T-10, with the added bonus IIRC that it should line up with my moved trans mounts in the Ranchero without modification.

Ah gotcha, that makes sense as the BW T-10 is pretty compact.

Here's one with a Ford bellhousing - they take up a little more space than some others, but the side forks are critical and the aluminum case option very nice indeed, in addition to being pretty cheap, and available for any power rating. IIRC you can get a T-10 built with your exact shaft sizes and ratios built brand new for something like $2-$3k, with used oens being far cheaper.

I know Ashcroft makes a stumpy bellhousing for the R380, but then again I don't think that there are any adapter plates so you'd probably have to have one made to fit the BW T-10.

Would work for Chevy to Rover bellhousing, or for Rover to Chevy bellhousing. There are others, this is just the easiest example to find.

Sweet, didn't do much research on the adapter plates just knew about dumpy bellhousing because my dad and I are fitting a 300TDI into is 109 SII and don't want to move the grill.

...Actually, we have a Benz 300d/OM 617 turbo that came out of an S-class destined for a II 109 safari as well, and haven't done the purchasing of adapters yet at all. Not going to move the grill, but probably modify the grill frame on the back side for a larger radiator closer to the face, with electric fan to the outside.

See this for what a drop-in goes for new - quite appealing, really.

Alternately, cutting out the middleman, if buying a new T-10 sans bellhousing, one can just get an appropriate one - no adapter.

With the dumpy bellhousing the 300 fits snugly and the only thing we have to worry about is the placement of the intercooler.

Check this out . I think that's the correct bolt pattern for a T-10.
Really just need a BOP flywheel and clutch (probably off an Olds or Pontiac) to complete the setup.

There's only one point of trickery and that is that the old BOP bolt pattern (Rover) I think uses three bolts over the top instead of two. I'll have to check aluminumv8 on that before I do anything, but it's really just fiddly little stuff at that point.

Yeah, you have the big stuff straightened out so just a little tweeking here and there and I think you'll be good.
